Mathematical Olympiad
HBCSE, known as Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, organizes The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India every year on behalf of NBHM, known as National Board for Higher Mathematics. The main purpose of this Olympiad is to identify the mathematical talent in India among pre-university students.
In this case, it needs to be mentioned that the Mathematical Olympiad Programme is conducted in 5 stages.
Stage 1— Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO and pre – RMO)
This one is a three-hour written test in which six or seven problems must be solved. The result and performance in RMO decide the number of students (from each region) who will be selected for the Stage 2 INMO.
The responsibility of conducting the RMO in respective regions remains upon the regional coordinators, who can prepare the question papers themselves or use the central RMO question paper that the Mathematical Olympiad Cell, HBCSE, and TIFR prepared.
Whereas a few regions organize a pre-RMO exam. Depending on the result of this exam, it is decided which students will get the chance to appear for RMO.
Stage 2— Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
Those students who will be selected in RMO and those who have got INMO merit certificates will be capable of appearing for INMO. This one is a four-hour written test. Depending on the result and performance in INMO, the top 30-35 students from all over the country will be chosen as INMO awardees.
Stage 3— International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)
HBCSE organizes a one-month training camp for these INMO awardees every year. Students who are the INMO awardees of the earlier years and those who have completed the postal tuition well throughout the year will be invited as senior students. A selection test will be done throughout the camp. Based on the test result, the team of the six best students will be chosen from the combined pool of junior and senior participants.
Stage 4— Pre-departure Training Camp for IMO
This team of six students needs to go through a training round which will be held for ten days before the departure for IMO.
Stage 5— International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
A leader, a deputy leader, as well as an observer, will accompany his selected six-member team who will represent the country at the IMO. This contest is conducted by two written tests organized on two consecutive days.
